As the new year approaches, it is only right that we pay our respects to 2012 and all that it has given us. This past year has cultivated a variety of trends such as cross-fit training, colored denim jeans, and of course music. Artists, songs, and music videos have been exciting and unpredictable throughout the past eleven and a half months. Artists have elevated their careers to a completely different level by creating big hits with big named people. This year there has been a surge of unique and creative collaborations of unexpected duos that have proven themselves to be successful. Musicians from totally different genres are crossing over and teaming up to create new sounds and feels.
Pop star Justin Bieber teamed up with rapper Nikki Minaj, the soulful Christina Aguilera collaborated with country superstar Blake Shelton, and Rapper 50 Cent has called on Adam Levine to add a pop feel to his latest song. There have been countless combinations that are keeping the public on their toes and their ears happy.
Boy bands were absent after the unfortunate fade out of groups such as Backstreet Boys, NSync, and Boyz2Men. However, this year seems to have brought some new heartthrobs into the lives of young girls all around the world. One Direction and The Wanted have exploded and have been making their way around the world touring, performing, and launching themselves into the public eye.
There have been an insane amount of stand out artists in 2012 that have gotten themselves a spot on the charts and have consistently stayed there. However, there has been a pattern of three extremely talented and diverse artists that have graced the charts week after week. Adele, Rihanna and Gotye have proven to be the most popular of the year. Adele has been crowned as number one on several different types of billboard charts and has earned her number one spot on the albums chart for ‘21’. Rihanna has held the number one spot on several top artist billboards and specifically on the radio songs artists chart. Rihanna's "We Fell in Love" song was a hit at weddings this year, and the perfect jam for any Bride and Groom who enjoy that boutique influenced entertainment vibe. Gotye’s ‘Somebody that I used to know’ has been awarded with the number one song on the charts. Who can forget breakout singles such as ‘Call Me Maybe’ by Carly Rae Jepsen and ‘Gangnam Style’ by Psy? Not to mention the rise of popularity and interest in Electronic Music Festivals and Dubstep, electronic dance music.
Rappers Kanye West and Jay-z are continually paving the way in the R&B/Hip-Hop world. In late 2011, the two collaborated on and released an album called ‘Watch the Throne’ and began a worldwide tour that stretched all the way into June of 2012. This album was nominated for four Grammy Awards including Best Rap Album, with their single “Otis” winning Best Rap Performance. At SCE, we had the honor and privilege of working with Kanye and Jay-Z on their ‘Watch The Throne’ tour.
2012 has been a creative year of music that has soared past 2012. Music today is constantly changing and evolving and has the incredible ability to inspire and motivate people all over the world. In our profession, music is everything. The creativity that the artists of today exude motivates us to be unique, inventive, and to never settle. At SCE, we strive to change the game regularly.
